Improve Your Pet’s Health

Many Americans are overweight because we eat too much and don’t get enough exercise. Unfortunately we’re doing the same to our pets. We’re often too busy to take our dogs for a walk or to play at the park. More and more cats are living indoors these days. To compound the problem, we often give our pets treats and let them eat as much as they want. The result is that just like humans, our pets are gaining weight.

In all fairness, your pet isn’t helping matters. Dogs, cats and other pets are adorable when they beg for food. They look at you with those sad eyes and pretty soon you’re feeding them table scraps. Letting them eat whatever and whenever they want to is just as bad for them as it is for us. Your pet’s veterinarian will tell you that excess fat can cause diabetes, joint pains and a host of other health problems. Some animals are so obese that they have trouble just walking and playing.

If you decided that it’s time to turn things around, there are some pretty simple steps you can take. First, switch to a low fat pet food. Most brands of pet food have a low fat variety. Determine how much food your pet will get each day and stick to it. Start by looking at the pet food package. It will often tell you how much food your pet needs, either according to its weight or breed. If you are still uncertain, consult your veterinarian.

Along with a reduced calorie diet, your pet needs exercise. If you have a dog, take him out for a walk. This will be great for his overall health, and it will help you too. Walking is one of the best aerobic exercises for both of you. You could also take him to the park and throw a ball for him. In addition to getting exercise, you’re likely to meet up with other dogs and their owners, which is great for socialization. Cats like to play too. Get piece of yard and drag it along the floor. Some cats will even chase light from a flashlight!

Weigh you pet at least once a month to see if they are losing weight with the current mix of food and exercise. If not, you’ll need to decrease the calories and/or increase the exercise.

Your pet’s overall health and happiness will improve when he gets the right amount of food and exercise.
